Our StorY
Mzizi is a swahili word that translates to root.
Mzizi Empowerment Initiative (MEI) is a registered local community based organisation in Kenya. Our organisation was registered in 2022 under the Ministry of labour and social protection. Mzizi Empowerment initiative serves the locals of the slums in Nairobi (specifically in Embakasi area) and rural areas in Makueni and Murang’a.
In 2015, one of the Co-founders Abigail Mukonyo was a student in Narok county and discovered the impact climate change has on the daily lives of local people and especially those in slum set ups and rural areas that are usually disadvantaged in regards to resource allocation. Abigail realised just how much coming with solutions need to be based on dealing with the root causes that will lead to sustainable and impactful solutions as compared to working on the curative solutions.
Mzizi is founded on the deep belief and passion of involving the community to identify the root causes to the challenges they face and empowering them to arrive at sustainable solutions towards the challenges they face.

Our focus areas are food security and plant based nutrition advocacy, animal rights and community projects that are born from program 1 and 2.
Since 2022, we have impacted an accumulative of 6574 individuals in Kenya. Our projects have been actualised in 7 educational institutions, 3 religious institutions in 4 slum areas and 2 rural areas.
